gotong-royong to clean up the Kampung Melayu flats in Air Itam.
MORE than 150 volunteers comprising members of the Kampung Melayu Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) together with Kampung Melayu residents, took part in a gotong-royong in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidil Adha celebrations.
Despite the rain and strong winds, the volunteers including Penang Municipal Council workers, cleaned up the surrounding areas of Kampung Melayu in Air Itam, Penang, including a surau and a field.
They also repainted several flats in Kampung Melayu and refurbished the lifts yesterday.
JKKK chairman Ariffin Abidin. 65, said the gotong-royong was held in conjunction with the JKKK’s festive celebrations, which will be held in Kampung Melayu between 8am and 10pm on Wednesday.
There will be a host of cultural events, competitions and activities held at the function.
Air Itam assemblyman Wong Hon Wai said some 20,000 people were expected to attend the event, which would be held on the second day of Hari Raya Haji, as the Muslims would be busy carrying out their religious duties on the first day of the celebration.
“The gotong-royong is conducted to foster greater solidarity and community spirit. Besides that, it is also to help less fortunate families,” he said.
